What We Cover:

  • Right out of school Sarah found herself unhappy after the first year of her new job, and she realized in situations like that we have choices, we can choose to stay where we are and suffer through things, or we can make a change.  Sarah choose to make a career change and utilized the next few years to learn as much as she could.

  • Sarah discovered that learning was a type of currency, she watched people doing things she found interesting, she asked to learn from them, and then took that information and paid it forward.  She found she enjoyed the opportunity to share information with her teammates knowing that the tools could help that person in their own role.

  • Sarah talks about the value and importance of mentorship in her career journey and finding someone who is doing the type of work that interests you, who are in a place where you want to be, and how we can work to create relationships with those people.

  • As we explored this idea of work/life balance Sarah also talked about the importance of figuring out what it looks like for you to be mentally, personally, and professionally balanced because balance cannot and does not mean the same thing for everyone.

  • Something she encouraged us all to keep in mind - Just because it’s balanced or unbalanced today doesn’t mean it is going to be that way tomorrow, it is a daily check in on where our attention and energy is needed that day.

  • One piece of advice I loved throughout the episode is when you are starting a new business or project, start small, as this allows you to scale slowly and grow with it.
